The Teachers College Honors Students, Retiring Faculty and Staff at End-of-Year Banquet


Eighty Emporia State University students from The Teachers College and seven retiring faculty and staff members received special recognition at The Teachers College 33rd Annual Honors Banquet held the evening of May 5. In addition, because students studying to become teachers through Emporia State take courses to teach in specific content areas (math, science, reading, etc.), special recognition was given to a retiring science professor. Kimberly Nguyen, graduate student, was featured in the American Art Therapy Association’s Art Therapy Today for her work which resulted in her receiving the 2017-18 Nancy Knapp Memorial Scholarship. Nguyen is a Vietnamese-American, first-year graduate student at Emporia State University. Her experience with art as a tool of self-expression and understanding of cultural conflict led her to simultaneously pursue art therapy and clinical counseling masters degrees. Learn more…

Undergraduate and graduate psychology students presented at the 2017 Great Plains Students’ Psychology Convention at Fort Hays State University in March. Students Rodger Belyea, Jackie Arnold, and Chukwunenye Nweke all won awards for their presentations.

Health Promotion students, under the direction of Dr. Jennifer Thomas, organized another successful Laps 4 Landon in April, raising $8,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and drawing more than 450 people from the campus and Emporia community. The event is held in honor of Landon Dody who battles the disease. View photos from the event.

More than 60 students and nine faculty members from programs within The Teachers College presented their findings during Emporia State’s Research and Creativity Day in late April. Faculty – from within the college or with colleagues across camps – also shared projects; other materials were developed by faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students.

The Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation inducted five new members in April to its Hall of Honor. Flint Hills Map Dedication 


A new program called “You are Here: Flint Hills Map & Education,” a project of the Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation, held sequential map dedication ceremonies at ESU on April 12. Exhibits, featuring the geographic and environmental maps, are now mounted in the Visser Hall Atrium and in William Allen White Library’s 2nd Floor. Learn more…

Homemade puppets. DIY Flowerpots. Wigs made of various materials. Paintings made with straws. These projects were that the “Art Lady” on television’s Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood showed children – and adults – how to create. The woman guiding Mr. Rogers in these activities was Judy Rubin, who is a nationally-recognized art therapist. She spoke at ESU’s 43rd Annual Art Therapy Discovery Day on March 12. Another featured guest speaker was Charles Anderson. He is a noted art therapist who began his career at the nationally-known Menninger Clinic in Topeka in 1962. After an army career including a post in Alaska, Anderson worked at the Menninger Clinic until 2003, and has taught art therapy in the region for the last several years. Learn more…

Nearly 40 people in eight teams competed in Kappa Delta Pi’s Annual Lace Up for Literacy event. This year, Dr. Seuss-themed teams competed in a campus/community Amazing Race. This was the second year of the event and participation more than doubled. Funds raised support K‐12 student travel to the WAW Awards Ceremony in October. View more photos of the event.

ESU Health promotion majors and area medical professionals hosted the annual Teddy Bear Clinic at the Flinthills Mall on April 8. The Teddy Bear Clinic exposes children to medical procedures they may undergo, as ESU students and medical personnel measure, give first-aid, and “x-ray” (shown above) to children’s stuffed animals.

Hosted by the Great Plains Center for Gifted Studies and partially funded through a Teaching Innovation and Faculty Creativity grant from The Teachers College, high ability students in grades three through eight prepared a three-course meal using precision cooking or “Molecular Gastronomy” techniques on April 29, 2017. Students experienced sous vide, spherification and powderization molecular gastronomy techniques for a mixed green starter salad, chicken with spring vegetables entrée, and ice cream dessert. Bo Andersen, Joe Kern, Jonny Leach, and Abby Phelps taught informative hands-on classes. Dr. Connie Phelps directed the camp assisted by Misty DeDonder, Megan Glenn, Connie Staley, and Sherry Roth. DeDonder Farms and Kern from My Seven Acres Community Supported Agriculture for provided the farm-to-table foods. The center will offer a Summer Enrichment Camp July 10-14, 2017, with Molecular Gastronomy, LEGO and Creative Expression sessions. The Flint Hills Writing Project, based in the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence, recently was awarded two grants totaling $35,000 from the National Writing Project. The grant proposals were written by Dr. Heather Caswell and Dr. Roger Caswell, co-site director for FHWP.

Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Professor Emeritus Dr. Kathy Ermler is one of six nominees for the Women of Excellence Award for her volunteer work with the St. Joseph, MO Friends of the Animal Shelter.

Five ESU Alumni Receive Horizon Awards

The Horizon Award is a regional competition that recognizes exemplary first-year educators. The competition is divided into four regions that correspond to the state’s U.S. Congressional districts, with up to four elementary and four secondary teachers selected from each region. This year’s Emporia State alumni receiving awards were:

Larry E. Anderson (BS 71 – Social Science, MS 76 – Counselor Education), Thayer, has retired from a 23-year teacher career at Neosho County Community College.

Mike C. Manning (BA 71 – Psychology, Political Science), Paradise Valley, AZ, was named to the 2017 "Top 50 in Arizona" by Super Lawyers.

Denise L. Scribner (BSE 75 – Physical Education), Wichita, was inducted into Emporia State University's Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Hall of Honor and was the recipient of the 2017 Excellence in Teachers about Agriculture Award from the Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom.

Patricia L. Skiles (BSE 78 – Elementary Education, MS 03 – Special Education), Ottawa, was recently named the Ottawa Elementary Teacher of the Year for 2017-18.

Sue Harsh (BSE 81 – Recreation), Cassoday, was recognized as Rural
Water Bookkeeper of the Year by the Kansas Rural Water Association.

Dr. Joan Elizabeth Phillips (MS 81 - Art Therapy), Norman, OK, died February 6 at the age of 63. Phillips had served as an adjunct instructor in the ESU Department of Counselor Education, a frequent presenter at the ESU Art Therapy Discovery Day Conference, Past‐President of the American Art Therapy Association, was a Fulbright Scholar, and served on the faculty at Oklahoma University.

Amy Fangman (BSE 92 – Elementary Education), Shawnee, is the recipient of the 2017 Kissick Construction Teamwork Award.

Jeff E. Hayes (MS 92 – School Psychology, Education Specialist; MS 93 – School Psychology), Salina, recently became the assistant director of Special Education at Central Kansas Cooperative in Education.

Jennifer L. O'Loughlin-Brooks (MS 94 – Psychology), McKinney, TX, is the president-elect of Psi Beta, the psychology honor society for community colleges.

Dr. Jessica R. Dain (BSE 95 – English, BSE 95 – Physical Education, MS 98 – Educational Administration), Olathe, was inducted into Emporia State University's Health, Physical Education and Recreation Hall of Honor for her exemplary work in education.

Kris D. Burkholder (MS 96 – Counselor Education), Marion, was named "Counselor of the Year" by the Kansas Counseling Association.

Christopher T. Curtis (BS 97 – Recreation), Salina, is the new wellness and recreation director for the City of Concordia.

Katrina R. Metzger (BS 97 – Rehabilitation Services Education), Meriden, was recognized as an Outstanding Employee of the Second Quarter for Fiscal Year by the Kansas Juvenile Correctional Facility.

Jason R. Vittone (MS 97 – Health, Physical Education & Recreation), Mexico, MO, was inducted into Emporia State University's Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.

2000s

Kristy Sailors (MS 06 – Instructional Design & Technology), Overland Park, will begin a new job as Director of Technology Education for the Houston Independent School District June 1.

Jerod L. Kruse (BS 01 – Social Sciences, MS 07 – Health, Physical Education & Recreation), Lee’s Summit, MO, is the assistant defensive backs/safeties coach for the Cleveland Browns.

Anna J. Catterson (BIS 02 – Integrated Studies, MS 04 – Instructional Design & Technology), Benedict, received the 2016 Outstanding Unclassified Professional Employee of the Year award from Emporia State
University.

Amanda J. Loving (BSE 02 – Elementary Education, MS 09 – Adaptive Special Education, Special Education), Pawnee Rock, a second-grade teacher at Riley School, was recently named the USD 428 Teacher of the Year.

Ashly M. McGinnis (BS 02 – Psychology, MS 04 – Counselor Education), Saint Joseph, MO, recently became the assistant principal for Lafayette
High School.

Joshua B. Lanning (BSE 03 – Biology, MS 07 – Educational Administration, MS 08 – Curriculum Leadership Concentration / PreK-12, Curriculum & Instruction), Attica, is the new superintendent of Smith Center USD 237.

Jordan C. Bell (BS 04 – Sociology, MS 08 – Health, Physical Education, & Recreation), Hutchinson, is a unit team manager at Hutchinson Correctional Facility.

Molly L. Wilson (BSE 07 – Elementary Education), Overland Park, recently became the program director for Leading Educators in Kansas City, MO.

Danielle R. (Gentry) Taylor (BSE 08 – Elementary Education), Junction City, recently became a co-owner of the Flower Box in Abilene.

Kelly D. (Burks) Heizman (MS 11 – Educational Administration PreK-12), Salina, recently became the Central High School assistant principal for the Salina School District USD 305.

Chad D. Bruner (BS 12 – Recreation), Moran, recently became the recreation commission director for the City of Ottawa.

Mark R. Calvin (MS 12 – Educational Administration PreK-12, Educational Administration), Bucklin, is the new principal for Uniontown Junior/Senior High School.

Nicole M. Seeley (MS 12 – Adaptive Special Education, Special Education), Derby, recently became the new Special Services Coordinator for the USD 260 Derby School District.

Jessica Crabtree (BS – 13 Business Education), Newton, received the Phi Beta Lambda 2017 Alumni of the Year award at the PBL state conference in March. Crabtree is a business teacher at Newton High School. She was also the Kansas Business Education Association Rookie Teacher of the Year in 2015 and Mountain Plains Business Education Association Rookie
Teacher of the Year in 2016. 

Sarah Jo (Smith) Heath (MS 13 – Health Education, Physical Education, & Recreation), Maize, was named the Central District SHAPE America Adapted Physical Educator of the Year.

Heather N. Newkirk (MS 13 – Special Education), Neodesha, was recognized as Teacher of the Year by the Hersh Banquet Committee.

Clara A. Corn (MS 15 – Art Therapy), Tulsa, OK, is the interim director of Plumb Place in Emporia.

Logan M. Clothier (BSE 16 – Physical Education), Topeka, is the head football coach for Circle High School.
